Biography

ARTIST STATEMENT:

The work of Lilac Lang invites us into a world of whimsy where awkward forms interact in colourful environments to explore possibilities in relationships and express aspects of human experience. "There's this urge to preserve the unperfected in my work. It's not about attesting to its beauty or arguing for its validity, because for me it is more about delighting in the silliness and awkwardness of imperfect things as they are: quirky, fun, and a little bit ugly."

Lang’s candid paintings present a direct and immediate use of her oil medium. Open, airy spaces are contrasted with sensitive pencil lines or thick impasto. Relying on courage and impulse, she fills her paintings with quirky shapes and unapologetic markings. The irony of these simple, capricious shapes rendered in a traditionally precious medium like oil paint adds a sense of light hearted playfulness to her work.
