Years ago during a very hard, cold winter, the wild rabbits were eating the bark off my family's apple trees to stay alive. My grandfather wrapped the trunks of the trees with a wire mesh to protect them, but it didn't work, the rabbits ended up killing the trees in the orchard. This wire mesh survived though, and when I saw it in our recycle pile, it struck me as a metaphor for failed protection. I hot-mudded it into the surface of the painting, and then painted on top.
