Brent Godfrey (brent)

I use the painting process to translate objects, figures and landscapes into physical metaphor. Combining varying degrees of abstraction and representation, I explore identity and memory, interpersonal relationships, societal structures and global connections.

Many of my recent paintings begin with loosely imagined aerial views overlaid with an implied history. As I paint, I am considering land and water masses, civilizations’ impact upon the terrain, communication channels and the vestiges of shifting powers.

Frequently, my paintings contain layered squares, lined up or floating among organic forms. These sub-compositions are abstractions of memories, meant to create a dialogue between past and present. My focus is on the moments when meaning is revealed and understanding shaped through the triumvirate of intellectual, emotional and physical experience.

The detailed, layered surfaces in my paintings are a physical record of the mental exercises occurring as I work. My marks are expressions of concern, loss, joy and desire. They are painted particles of thought, reaching for compositional resolve while leaving questions and struggles exposed.
