Kaiser August im fernen Rom ruft in schlaflosen Nächten aus: „Quintili Vare, legiones redde!“ (Quinctilius Varus, gib mir meine Legionen zurück). Nie wieder werden die Römer Besitzansprüche auf Gebiete rechts des Rheins erheben, nie wieder die besiegten Legionen aufstellen, einzigartig in der römischen Militärgeschichte.
