Femke Gerestein (Gerestein)
I investigate my fascinations by drawing. Drawing to me is a way of looking, of feeling, of experiencing. The energy I put into the drawing reflects directly on the outcome. The theme of my work is not only the subject of the drawing, but also the drawing itself.
Reoccurring subjects are female figures. My work starts by taking photographs of the model. In my latest work I am the model myself. While taking pictures there's no one in the room but me. This is an important point of departure. I photograph my body from different angles. I select the "worst" pictures for the drawings: too dark, out of focus, lots of noise. I draw the noise, not the body. The body lies beneath the noise and the cracks in the paper. Because I've established the overall view by taking the photographs, I can allow myself to zoom in and focus on the details with a complete devotion to drawing. The drawn surface is becoming the most important subject of my work.
In the process of drawing I investigate the subject by observing it from a distance, by then approaching it and by repeating this movement. I'd like the viewer of the drawing to experience a similar movement. This movement back and forth is an important theme in my work. The tactility of the drawing invites the viewer to take a closer look. Up close the overall view disappears and a new dimension in the drawn surface reveals itself.
In my drawings I'm trying to get into the subject of my drawing, into the details of the drawing and even through the surface of the paper. This movement back and forth and even through the membrane is the most important theme in my work.
