Thanks for the hint, Tom. Yes, I love it for its "unsteady" texture. Indeed jute is less stable in compare to canvas or cotton. So I use acrly primer of Lascaux – first very liquid layer so the textile sucks it all up, then in thicker layers with spatula. This foundation is afterwards much more stable than the textile itself and still stayes flexible (no cracking) and is fungicide aside. So hopefully the painting got a quite stable underground.
Still I am keen to know which supplier in Australia delivers strechers on Meranti?

Hi Jochen again,
I was admiring your painting and I noted that you painted on JUTE - in Australia jute is the cheapest and most unstable of painting surfaces, it seems to be prone to fungal attack and does not last. Students that have no money for better art materials use it - it has a fabulous texture. When I was teaching in the Art Schools and Universities, I encourached students to prime both sides with a good titaniun acrylic gesso. When I used it in student demonstrations I would first seal it with a fabricspecialized acrylic made in Belgium called "Powertex" then coat it with Titanium gesso, sand it back, recoat, sand it back, and repeat recoating until I had the surface I wanted to paint on.
In Australia good 14Oz Linen-Cotton canvases are available at affordable reasonable prices on Meranti (a marine grade stable timber) stretcher frames. That is what I try to use for most of my paintings - the suppliers reckon it will last at least 100 years.
Your paintings are beautiful - Can I encourage you to use a better surface to paint on - they deserve to last.

I suppose that in a way all the art my Artdoxa Gallery is digital - I start alot of my artworks by surrounding myself with my photoghaphs from my small Nikon digital camera. That is the way "Rainforest 4" started after I got home from Cairns. The picture was created on Saunder 380gsm watercolour paper which was then sponged in places and dried. Then I covered this textured watercolour paper with Grey and blue grey Gouache. When nearly dry I sponged the gouache off the surface leaving some in the texture of the paper. It was farmed and photographed with a digital camera. The photo was downloaded to my comuter and the picture was put into Photoshop and turned into a JPEG of a size downloadable to Artdoxa. So I agree with you it is in that regard digital. I really like a lot of your work and I look forward to seeing more.

I am flattered that you would take interest in my images and even more so that you would give such positive feedback.You demonstrate a technical mastery in line with the very best representational painters.The kind of people that set the bar to which I am striving.Guys like Paul Fenniak, Nerdrum, Sophie Jodoin, Christian Vincent and Alex Kanevsky.I'm not saying I'd want to emulate you but your polish and resolve is so pronounced one could take nothing away from or add to the images you've made and do them any service.I would one day like to say the same about my own stuff. The compositional arrangements of the figures on the black ground with the portraits is so perfect. A refreshing minimal place that lets the precisely observed and nuenced rendering breath in a singular psychologal space.These people share a nobility alone and set apart from everything.
What keeps you working so much with acrylics as opposed to oils? Are there any contemporary painters that you draw from lately?
