top Shower Print #2

This is from a project entitled, "Shower Print Project" where I have conversations with people while I print my face on their showers. After the event I document the outcome.

Jeff Wall is one of the most well known photographers in contemporary art. He has described conflicts in our society and has presented unexpected points of view. One of his famous works, The Mimic 1982, talks about social racism in Vancouver, a metropolis, which has been rated as one of the 3 most peaceful cities in the world.

In Mimic 1982, I see an Asian being harassed or looked down upon by a local citizen. This may not be of great interest to many local people, but it has great meaning for the overseas citizen or immigrant to Canada. For these reasons I love this piece. Some of the ideas in my work are influenced by Jeff Wall. I created my own version of this famous work, which I called Mimic in 2008. My work is about racism between societies and “foreign”, non-Asian citizen. In some Asian cultures, people believe that the white culture is leading the world. For example, great artists and musicians come from Europe and the West. As a result, many Asians went abroad to study in Western countries. However, times have changed. In the West people love to buy Asian products such as Japanese cameras and cars, and the market here is filled with Chinese products. In my work, I would like to show the competition between nations, leading and influencing each other.
