Artist Statement

The art of collage was first introduced to me as a way to incorporate found images into an ongoing sketchbook. My visual and tactile creativity is much stronger than my affinity for digital and computer processes. As I trained to be a graphic designer, I became interested in making compositions, i.e. assembling shapes and colors, and that led to my discovery of analog collages.

Opportunities to appreciate media and communication materials are time sensitive. Once viewed, printed materials are archived or become waste. I selectively remove the abandoned images from their historical context, in a sense deconstructing various identities portrayed in the original source.

The first object of importance in my 2-d work is the acknowledgement of the symbolism of the blank page. I approach most of my collage work giving consideration for negative space. I tend to balance my decisions concerning inclusion versus exclusion.

Most importantly, the precise juxtaposition of images allows an uninterrupted circulation within an individual work, which ties these intricacies into the whole. These juxtapositions occur through angular adjacency, tone, or negative spaces that imply figuration or repetition of positive shapes. In this way, abrupt transitions are possible without disorienting the viewer.

Upon completion, from the myriad of possibilities, a new discovery is documented. The images have been reborn for new interpretation.

Biography

I was born in Bryan, Texas, and spent my formative years in Texas and Memphis, Tennessee. My college years were spent in New York City. Currently I reside in NYC and Springfield, Ohio.
I have a BA (2008) from the State University of New York, Purchase, and majored in Communications and Media. I earned an AA in Graphic Design from the Pratt Institute, NY (2012).
My professional background includes teaching in several Montessori schools (Memphis and NYC); free-lance graphic design mural design.
Many artists have influenced my creativity. From a young age, I was encouraged to observe and draw, experiment with mixed media and to view my art as a part of myself to share with others. As I became more interested in art history and aware of periods of art movements like futurism, DADA and surrealism my individual style emerged. Some of the artists I am influenced by are: Egon Schiele, Max Ernst, Kurt Schwitters, Robert Rauschenberg, Man Ray, Erwin Blumenfeld, El Lissitzky and John Baldessari.
