In the Golden Age of polar research started a race to the South Pole: the first people to reach the Geographic South Pole were Norwegian Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) and his team on December 14, 1911. His rival, the English Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912), led a party of five which reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that they had been preceded by the Norwegian expedition. On their return journey, Scott and his four comrades all died from a combination of exhaustion, starvation and extreme cold.
Im Goldenen Zeitalter der Polarforschung kam es zu einem Wettlauf zum Südpol: Die ersten Menschen, die hierbei den geographischen Südpol erreichten, waren der Norweger Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) und seine Expeditionsgruppe. Sie gelangten am 14. Dezember 1911 zum Pol. Amundsens Konkurrent beim Wettlauf um das erste Erreichen des Südpols war der Engländer Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912). Er und seine Mannschaft erreichten den Pol allerdings erst einen Monat nach Amundsens Gruppe am 17. Januar 1912. Auf der Rückreise starben Scott und seine vier Begleiter an der extremen Kälte und an Unterernährung.
